LG Fashion Week

Day THREE

My favourite story developing out of yesterday's activities is a model-led charge to make fashion week in Toronto a bit less tacky.

For years this site shook its online head at the fact that Toronto's is about the only fashion week that calls itself world class, but doesn't provide food for the models.

This sad quirk wasn't so important a year ago when the shows were downtown, but with this season's runway located in the abyss, it's not like models can step out and grab a quick bite between shows.

There is a large table of food set up for L'Oréal Paris' artists, which is great, because they're on their feet all day and deserve their meals and munchies.

But it's right next to the area where the models are held for hours at a time.

The bananas actually have their own bouncer who grabs the wrists of unsuspecting models and scolds them for their innocent assumption that a table covered in fresh fruit might be a courtesy to the people that bring the fashions to life.

BUT... the bright side is this: one model - Elyse Saunders, who doesn't exactly need Toronto, and we're lucky to have her - started a petition to get food provided for the talent.

I think mine was signature #74, and Jeanne Beker added her own name several hours later, just moments before Stacey McKenzie. It's off to a great start.

I, personally, would love to see the models refuse to do Fashion Week next season if this concession isn't made, but that's probably (not) just me.

If it means another sponsorship, and we end up with the President's Choice Model Environment, I'm cool with that, but the Fashion Design Council of Canada needs to find a way to get this done.

And if it doesn't, I'll be happy to keep writing these summaries for the thousands of fashion industry followers that read Modelresource everyday.

On the bright side, Joe Fresh imported a bunch of great models for its show last night, including plus-size superstar Crystal Renn, Canadian grunge model icon Kirsten Owen and the remarkable Kelsey Van Mook, to complement a stellar list of models that more frequently appear at Toronto fashion week.

All fur in these photos, by the way, is "faux."
