First we take Manhattan...
Trump Models' president Jon Tutolo may never have heard of poutine (yeah, I asked him), but he certainly appreciates Canadian flavour.
In the five years since Trump opened its doors, its small roster has increasingly been staffed by Canadians. Modelresource spoke to Tutolo in his Manhattan office.
Modelresource: Why are Canadian models doing so well right now?
Jon Tutolo: They really are professional. It's what got the Brazilians going too. There was a time when the girls were so irresponsible, but then the girls from Brazil came in and were ready to work and the clients loved them.
The Canadian girls are much more reservedů professional. They're into their work, they're into the dollar. They have goals and they know 'I'm not in school right now so this is what I'm doing.'
Modelresource: How important is scouting?
Jon Tutolo: No matter what your size, you always want to be able to provide the client with something new, so scouting will always be a top priority. We've developed some pretty great relationships [in Canada].
At this time of the year we're planning our travel for 2005 all over the world, and budgeting for that. We're coming to Canada next year.
Modelresource: How long do you expect the Canadian craze to last?
Jon Tutolo: I think the Canadian trend will continue. I think the market has proven itself as a great source of new talent, and I think it will keep producing great new talent for the New York market.
Toronto and Montreal are really on-the-ball for fashion and models, and they really are major metropolitan cities. You also have the capabilities through some pretty great magazines to quickly build models' books.
Modelresource: How well do the Canadians adjust to New York?
Jon Tutolo: Once Canadians come, they're ready to work. Most of the time they're English-speaking -- most of the time it's not hard for them to travel or cross the border. For French Canadians it can sometimes be a bit more difficult, but then, Rachel Blais is a French Canadian and she completely embraced the situation and made the most of it.
Modelresource: Any amusing stories about the Canadian models?
Jon Tutolo: The most amusing stories come from Lisa Cant, and her experience coming from such a small suburb. Her Dad thought her Italian Vogue cover was really cool, but when she came out on Canadian Flare he bought every one he could find.
